What are Tarot Card Readings

Tarot Card Readings. A type of cartomancy where practitioners use tarot cards, supposedly to obtain insights into the past, present, or future.

Contents Of A Standard Deck

A standard tarot deck contains 78 cards, divided into two categories: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.

In addition to their use by professional cartomancers for divining for others, tarot cards are also widely employed as a tool for personal guidance and spiritual growth.

Are you curious about whether tarot is ‘real’ . . .

Tarot card readings provide more of a story rather than delving into the mysticsm of fortune-telling. My approach is completely secular; I do not conduct readings with any psychic component. We hold the view that tarot doesn’t dictate specific actions, and we see this as beneficial. Our appreciation for tarot stems from its narrative strength, the evocative symbolism that encourages introspection and questioning, thus enabling individuals to chart their own futures. The interaction among the various cards can reveal fresh insights, confront entrenched and unproductive thought patterns, or simply compel an acknowledgment of aspects of oneself that have been ignored (my thanks to the tarot for that). That isn’t to say the cards aren’t useful for decision-making or contemplating future paths. However, the manner in which they assist diverges from the expectations set by popular culture.

How do tarot cards work?

When you lay out all of the cards in a tarot deck, you find all of life hidden within them. The tarot is made up of two sections called the Arcanas (the word means “secrets”) – there’s the Major Arcana, which contains 22 cards, and the Minor Arcana, which contains 56. Within the Minors, you find four suits, just as you would in a regular pack of playing cards, but with the difference that each suit is associated with a different element and aspect of the self. The suits are: The Cups, associated with water and the emotional self. The Pentacles, linked to earth and the physical self. The Swords, the cards of air, which are all about the mind. And the Wands, the suit of fire, which are about how you apply your energy. Meanwhile, the journey of the Major cards contains seismic shifts in life, telling a dramatic story of beginnings and endings, discoveries and losses, stillness and growth. It is often the Major Arcana cards that newcomers to tarot recognise – The Hanged Man, for example, or The Lovers. And when you combine all of these different cards you’ve got all of the ingredients for a thousand unique narratives.

Tarot card use.

Practitioners hold the belief that tarot cards can assist individuals in exploring their spiritual paths. Those who utilize tarot for personal divination may seek insights on a broad range of topics. From health or financial issues to what they consider spiritually optimal for themselves. The manner in which practitioners employ the cards for such personal queries varies greatly with individual beliefs. For instance, some may hold the view that the cards themselves magically provide answers, while others might attribute the card arrangements to a supernatural force or mystical energy. I have used the Shadowscape Tarot Card Pack to show the Major and Minor Arcana as an example,
The Major Arcana.

These are the named or numbered cards in a cartomantic tarot pack.

The Major Arcana is the name given to cards which are trump cards used in normal tarot card.

A standard deck of 78 tarot cards usually contain 22 such cards.

There are times when I won't read the cards

Many tarot card readers, including me, adhere to a strict code of ethics. This means that there will be a list of boundaries around when we will and won’t conduct a reading.

In this regard, I will not conduct a reading for a third party client who has not provided me with permission via telephone or in person.  I will also not carry out readings on medical, legal or financial issues, or for minors.
